A Fully Custom Limestone Entrance Portico
This custom limestone entrance portico was designed and fabricated for a luxury private residence in Upstate New York. Developed from the architect’s drawings, the entrance was produced from white European limestone with a refined honed finish.
Completed in 2022, the project was constructed as a full limestone assembly rather than a thin stone veneer. Several architectural components were fabricated from massive stone sections reaching up to 12 inches in thickness.
Marvelous Marble’s scope included design development, stone engineering, custom fabrication, component preparation, protective crating and supply for the completed residential entrance.

From Architect Drawings to 3D Design
The project began with architectural drawings defining the proportions and character of the custom stone entrance. These drawings were translated into a detailed three-dimensional model so the geometry, depth and arrangement of the limestone components could be evaluated before fabrication.
Because the portico was designed as a full limestone structure, the jambs, recessed panels, curved arch, projecting moldings and cornice elements had to be coordinated as one complete architectural assembly.
Limestone Shop Drawings & Component Engineering
Detailed shop drawings established the overall dimensions, profiles and individual sections of the limestone entrance portico. The exploded component model separated the structure into fabrication pieces and illustrated how the jambs, panels, arch sections, moldings, cornice and base elements would come together.
This pre-fabrication planning was particularly important because several components were produced from exceptionally thick limestone sections.

Custom Architectural Limestone Fabrication
Selected white European limestone was fabricated specifically for the project. Large stone sections were cut and shaped into the architectural components defined by the approved shop drawings.
The recessed panels, curved arch elements, projecting moldings and substantial cornice pieces required precise dimensional cutting and careful preparation. The finished surfaces received a honed treatment, creating a refined appearance suitable for the luxury residence.

Protective Crating & Transportation
Due to the weight, thickness and custom geometry of the architectural limestone components, the completed pieces were organized and packed in reinforced wooden crates for transportation.
Each crate was prepared as part of a coordinated shipment so the individual portico components could be identified, handled and delivered systematically. The crates were then loaded into a shipping container for delivery to the project.

The Completed Limestone Entrance Portico
The completed custom limestone entrance portico creates a strong architectural focal point against the residence’s darker masonry façade. The contrast between the white European limestone, gray exterior stone and natural wood entrance door emphasizes the depth and geometry of the stonework.
Although the entrance is composed of numerous individually fabricated limestone pieces, the completed installation reads as a unified architectural structure consistent with the original design and fabrication models.
